It's a little early to canonize Barack Obama. And in a year or two I may not feel nearly so charitable.
But as I listen to our new President speak to this country, I am struck by his honesty and forthrightness. And I wonder why the consumers of American government (that's you and me) have tolerated the incompetence and outright indecency of our leadership for so long.
Many years ago, we the stockholders in democracy should have expelled the snake oil salesmen (and women) who exist on both sides of the aisle and who sell out our ethics, peddle our influence, and deface our values.
The 44th President hasn't done anything yet. And he does face the most daunting set of circumstances of any incoming executive in my lifetime. But on a personal level, one thing has changed already. For the first time in a long time, I am proud to be an American.
For now.
